Twinset +
Twinset plays a style of music which originated in America in the 1960s, and was pioneered by legendary Hammond organists like Jimmy Smith and Big John Patton, and the people they played with such as saxophonist Lou Donaldson and drummer Idris Muhammad. The sound is characterized by the pulsing organ bass wich Christopher plays with his left hand, rich textural chords played with his right, and a driving R+B style beat provided by Paul. The music has a large improvisational component, with both Christopher and Daniel using the grooves as a vehicle for extended solo sections. This is feel good music and unlike some other types of jazz comes more from the heart than the head.
In music as with all art forms it is important not to just mimic those who have come before you, but to make your own statement. While Twinset are heavily influenced by those mentioned above, they also draw on their surroundings and the music of their peers in Wellington for inspiration. This is what gives Twinset’s music it’s unique sound.

The Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band +
Hailing from Wellington New Zealand, The Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band is a step back in time to music that filled the watering holes and dance-halls of New Orleans in the 1930's and 40's. Heavily influenced by the legendary entertainer Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives and Sevens, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans, the Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band looks to recreate the music and atmosphere found in the social and pleasure clubs of New Orleans during this time. The group features prominent Wellington musicians from bands such as Niko Nezna, Newtown Rocksteady, Zirigidum and Battlestar Galactika and our aim is to get asses shaking!

French for Rabbits - Thursday Showcase +
Here at The Cross we have realized that there is just too much darn talent in this town and we want to have more room to support those up and coming, under-appreciated and hardworking bands like that one your flatmate has been working their toosh off for over the last three years, or that band your friend always tells you to go and see but you just didn't make it...
Well no excuses now because here at The Southern Cross we never charge you to enjoy a show - It's all FREE! In fact we'll provide the couches, tables and chairs so you can just sit back, relax and soak up some of Wellington's best local music. Let us take care of the dosh so those musos can eat and pay the rent on time!
Best of all, you won't have to be up all night because we will be starting at 7.30pm and finishing up before 11pm so you can still be in bed at a reasonable hour for a Thursday night - So why not come and support your mates and be a part of Wellington's vibrant musical community!
If you or anyone you know thinks that they have what it takes don't hesitate to email us at music@thecross.co.nz - please bear in mind that we will require a recording or video or both of your band to be sure of your sound.

Here at The Southern Cross we take legal stuff quite seriously. As a licenses premise we are obliged to follow a set of rules outlined by the New Zealand government to keep everyone (you and us) safe and having a good time. This is called Host Responsibility, and that’s just what we strive to be – responsible hosts! Click here to read more about the age restrictions & intoxication. And please if you are under 25 always carry the correct I.D with you, if we or our door staff ask you for I.D you have to show an accepted form (Passport, HANZ 18+ Card or a NZ Drivers License) or you wont be allowed on premise.
*OPENING HOURS : 8.00 AM – Late Monday to Friday and 9.00AM – Late in the Weekends
